Cross Cultural Competency

Cultural competence is an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. And is typically considered to consist of four parts: Awareness of one's own cultural worldview, (b) Attitude towards cultural differences, (c) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural skills. Developing cultural competence results in an ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively conduct business with people from different cultures. At Fox, we see cross cultural competence as key to developing business relationships with China.

Cross cultural competence is particularly important with respect to China where there are so many cultural nuances and where much of their methods of communication are informed by tradition, in a way American communication is not. A misinterpretation of a cultural cue can cost a business deal – understanding the cultural nuances makes communication, and business transactions, easier and more enjoyable. Without an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences, it is impossible to build the trust and understanding necessary for solid business relationships.
